Can a tailor make a dress bigger?

A row of dresses in jewel tones, from green and blue to purple and red, on hangers on a brass rail.

The answer

Sometimes, but not always. It depends on how much extra fabric, called seam allowance, is left in the seams, and beaded, lined or tightly structured dresses limit what can be done. Taking a dress in is much easier than letting it out, so it is wise to buy for your largest measurement. Ask a tailor to check the seams before you buy, and get a quote before agreeing to any work.
