How can I tell what size to buy when sizes vary between makers?

A row of dresses in jewel tones, from green and blue to purple and red, on hangers on a brass rail.

The answer

Take your bust, waist and hip measurements and compare them with the specific size chart for the dress you want, not your usual size. Use a soft tape over lightweight clothing, and record the numbers and the date. If your measurements fall between sizes, choose the larger one and have the dress tailored, because taking in is easier than letting out. Online, read customer comments for fit patterns.
