How do I prevent a dress from wrinkling when I travel?

A row of dresses in jewel tones, from green and blue to purple and red, on hangers on a brass rail.

The answer

Choose wrinkle-resistant fabrics when possible, such as polyester, many knits and crepe blends, and fold the dress gently with acid-free tissue or carry it in a garment bag. Steam it when you arrive rather than ironing directly, since steaming is gentler. If you iron, turn the dress inside out, use the lowest setting that works and put a pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric. Never press embellishments directly.
