What fabrics are best for hot weather?

A row of dresses in jewel tones, from green and blue to purple and red, on hangers on a brass rail.

The answer

Breathable natural fabrics such as cotton and linen, and lightweight blends, tend to feel coolest. Linen is airy but wrinkles readily, cotton is soft and breathable, and looser silhouettes and light colors can also help. Polyester varies widely in quality, and some versions trap heat. Check the lining too, since a heavy lining adds warmth. For a long evening in a warm room, choose lightweight layers.
